This is Rhode Island’s only monument to this founding father of the Dominican Republic, Juan Pablo Duarte.

Duarte is considered a folk hero and revolutionary visionary in the modern Dominican Republic. He helped organize and promote the Trinitario movement that eventually led to the Dominican revolt and independence from Haitian rule in 1844. The Dominican Community of Rhode Island donated this memorial to Roger Williams Park. The local neighborhoods along Broad Street are rich with Dominican immigrants and their stories.
