Call for Nominations: Board of Directors

The Roger Williams Park Conservancy, an independent nonprofit organization, works with the City of Providence and its Parks Department to steward Roger Williams Park, offer community programs, raise resources, coordinate marketing efforts, and plan for long-term sustainability and success. The Roger Williams Park Conservancy was created as part of the Rhode Island Foundation’s 2016 Centennial Campaign for Roger Williams Park. Visit RWPconservancy.org to learn more.

The Conservancy’s founding board of directors is seeking nominations to expand its board.

Board’s Role

The Board of Directors supports the work of the Roger Williams Park Conservancy and provides mission-based leadership and strategic governance. While the Conservancy expects to hire staff soon, the board-staff relationship is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the board is both critical and expected.

Specific board member responsibilities include:

  • Oversight of strategy, programs, and outcomes
  • Financial and legal oversight
  • Acting as an ambassador for the Conservancy
  • Ensuring the Conservancy’s commitment to a diverse board and staff.
  • Considering the Conservancy a philanthropic priority, commensurate with capacity

In this inaugural term, Conservancy directors will be elected to a one, two, or three-year term to stagger turnover. Board meetings will be held approximately six times throughout the year, and committee meetings will be held in coordination with full board meetings. As the Conservancy is still a volunteer-led organization, directors are expected to regularly serve at our events and activities. Service on the Conservancy’s board of directors is without remuneration.

Qualifications

This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about the Conservancy mission and who has a track record of board leadership. His/her accomplishments will allow him/her to attract other well-qualified, high-performing board members.

Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:

  • Extensive professional experience with significant executive leadership accomplishments in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector.
  • Savvy diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals.
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for the Conservancy’s mission.
  • A commitment to and understanding of the Conservancy’s stakeholders, preferably based on experience.
  • Independence and objectivity, ability to serve the organization as a whole rather than any special interest group, constituency, or issue.

We are seeking team players passionate about Roger Williams Park and willing to make their commitment to this board a priority.
