The Union Soldier is one of Rhode Island’s many monuments to the men who fought to preserve the Union and to end slavery.
The Providence Association of Mechanics and Manufacturers donated he Union Soldier in 1898 to memorialize the soldiers of the Union Army. This replica was the first life-size sculpture cast by the Gorham Manufacturing Company. The original is located at Gettysburg National Historic Battlefield.
The Union Soldier originally stood on the hill overlooking the Temple to Music, where it was guarded by cannons and a flag.
